“Tech slot,” “flex slot,” “silver bullet,” and “meta call” are strategic labels rather than formal deck-construction categories. In this guide, a tech card is included mainly because it improves a defined matchup or answers a particular type of threat. A flex card supports the deck more broadly but can be changed without dismantling its central plan.
It helps to separate a list into three conceptual layers:
- Core cards make the deck’s primary plan function. These include the economy, draw, essential breakers or ICE, access tools, agenda support, and other pieces without which the deck stops behaving as intended.
- Flex cards are useful in ordinary games but are not structurally essential. They may improve consistency, provide redundancy, or cover several common situations.
- Tech cards are chosen primarily to change a specific matchup, punish an expected strategy, or prevent a known failure mode. Their value may fall sharply when the target problem does not appear.
These labels depend on the deck. Protection may be optional tech in one Runner list but a core requirement in another. Second, include the complete cost. A card with a modest install or play cost may still consume influence, a click, a draw, memory, a server slot, or credits that were reserved for a run or advancement. If the answer leaves you unable to execute the turn it was meant to enable, it has not solved the full problem.
Third, value secondary utility. A broad card that modestly improves three matchups can be a better use of space than a devastating answer to one rare opponent. Narrow cards become more attractive when their target is common, the unfavorable matchup matters to your expected field, and the card produces a large swing rather than a small convenience.
Runner tech should preserve the ability to run
Runner matchup preparation often competes with rig space, access, draw, run economy, and protection. - If the target matchup does not appear, can I discard, sell, install, or otherwise use the card without losing too much tempo?
This analysis depends on the deck’s pressure model. A fast central-pressure Runner may reject a slow but comprehensive answer because installing it gives the Corp time to stabilize. A slower rig-building deck may accept that setup cost because the card protects repeated late-game runs. If the underlying issue is basic rig coverage rather than matchup preparation, revisit how ICE and icebreakers interact before labeling the missing function as tech.
Corp tech must support a scoring window
Corp decks face a different constraint: every reactive card competes with economy, ICE, operations, assets, upgrades, and the agenda suite. The Corp cannot prepare for every Runner plan without diluting the ability to create and defend a server.
Ask what the proposed tech does for the Corp’s route to seven agenda points. Does it make a remote expensive enough to score behind? Does it discourage a type of access? Does it create a tempo loss the Corp can convert into advancement clicks? Or does it simply inconvenience the Runner without moving the Corp closer to a scoring window?
The last distinction matters. A surprising effect can be tactically satisfying while still being strategically weak. If the Corp spends a card, credits, and a click to delay the Runner by roughly the same amount, neither side may gain a meaningful window. Tech is strongest when it changes the Runner’s risk calculation or forces resource spending at a moment the Corp can exploit.
Also consider information. A face-down Corp card can represent several possibilities before it is revealed. Once a narrow answer becomes known, the Runner may route around it. Judge not only the effect when it fires, but also whether installing and protecting it fits the deck’s normal patterns well enough to preserve uncertainty.
How much tech should a deck include?
Do not begin with a fixed slot quota. Start with no dedicated matchup cards, identify the flex space left after the core plan is covered, and add answers one problem at a time. A focused deck with very little redundancy may have almost no safe flex space. A list with overlapping economy, draw, or multi-role tools may adapt more easily.
The right number of copies is also contextual. If a card must appear in the opening turns and cannot be searched for, a lone copy is unlikely to define the matchup reliably. If it can be found through existing tools, remains useful late, or is dangerous in multiples, fewer copies may be sensible. These are consistency judgments, not universal deckbuilding rules.

- Note dead copies and games in which the target problem never appeared.
- Repeat against the target strategy and against ordinary opponents before keeping the change.
Avoid scoring a card only by whether you won. A loss may still show that the answer worked but exposed a separate weakness. A win may occur without drawing the new card. Look for the promised change in decisions: an extra viable run, a protected scoring attempt, a better credit exchange, or fewer turns in which the deck cannot execute its main plan.
Finish with formal deck and format checks
Tech and flex slots are strategic concepts, but the resulting list must still follow formal deck-construction rules.
